What Does “内卷” (nèi juǎn) Really Mean?

内卷/ nèi juǎn /upper-intermediate
SpokenWrittenLiterature

内卷 describes a competition in which people keep adding effort just to avoid falling behind, while the shared payoff barely improves.

内卷 is a competition that keeps raising the cost of standing still. One person adds extra work, others match it to avoid looking weak, and yesterday’s “extra” quietly becomes today’s minimum—even when the result barely improves. The useful test is not how hard one person worked, but whether everyone is being pushed to spend more just to keep the same relative position. 勤奋 can belong to one person; 内卷 appears when effort becomes the price the whole group pays to stay in place.

Lǎoshī zhǐ yāoqiú shí yè, gébì zǔ zuò le èrshí yè, hái jiā le shìpín.

The teacher only asked for ten pages, but the group next to us made twenty and added a video.

Bo

Nà wǒmen shì bú shì yě děi jiā? Bùrán kàn qǐlái tài shǎo.

Do we have to add more too? Otherwise ours will look too short.

Kě dàjiā dōu zhème xiǎng, zuìhòu zhǐshì bǎ zuìdī biāozhǔn táigāo le.

But if everyone thinks that way, all we do is raise the minimum standard.

Bo

Nà wǒmen xiān dìng shí’èr yè, zhǐyǒu zhēn yǒu xīn nèiróng cái wǎng lǐ jiā.

Then let us cap it at twelve pages and only add more if we genuinely have new content.

Duì, bié wèile gēn biérén bǐ bǎ zìjǐ yě juǎn jìnqù.

Right—let us not get pulled into the rat race just to compete with others.

The required presentation is ten pages, but another group’s extras make Bo feel that twelve pages may look inadequate. Yue calls this pressure 内卷, and the pair respond by setting a limit based on useful content rather than comparison.
