BEGINNER MANDARIN CONVERSATION

What counts as a first conversation?

A first Mandarin conversation is more than saying 你好 and waiting for the other person to carry the exchange. You need to recognise a question, give one useful answer, return a question, and stay oriented when a name or detail is different from the model. That is the smallest conversation worth training: short enough for a complete beginner, but connected enough to reveal whether the language can move between two people.

This course starts with one visible exchange, then removes the support in stages. You hear and read the whole situation, notice the sounds and word order, retrieve the lines without the model, and meet a changed prompt. A correct response is scheduled to return later. A weak response produces one repair target. The goal is not to perform a memorised script once; it is to keep the same conversational job working when the surface changes.

Use a greeting as an opening move, then leave room for a response. The lesson treats 你好 as the door into the exchange, not as a complete conversation by itself.

WHY SCRIPTS BREAK

Three false signs of progress.

Recognition without retrieval

A line feels obvious while Chinese, pinyin, and English are visible together. Then the prompt disappears and nothing comes back. The course separates seeing an answer from producing it, so recognition cannot masquerade as usable speech.

A script that breaks on one change

You can repeat 我叫安娜, but a different name, number, or relationship makes the sequence fall apart. Changed prompts preserve the conversational purpose while replacing the memorised surface.

Immediate success without later memory

Repeating a line five times in one sitting can feel fluent because it is still warm. Delayed return asks for the same language after time has passed and in a different prompt, which gives a more honest signal.

BEGINNER QUESTIONS

Do I need to know Chinese characters first?

No. The first lesson shows characters, pinyin, audio, and English together, then removes support gradually. Characters are part of the language system, but they are not an entrance exam for beginning the conversation.

Is 你好 a natural first conversation?

It is a useful opening, not the whole exchange. The learning target includes answering a name question, asking something back, handling one changed detail, and closing after the other person responds.

How is this different from a beginner phrase list?

A list helps you recognise or look up separate lines. This route assigns the lines one connected job, checks them without the model, changes the information, records the weak point, and schedules a later return.

Can an AI-only course judge a real conversation?

It can check bounded evidence such as what you understood, which conversational move is present, whether a written response carries the required detail, and what should return next. It does not claim to read every intention or certify broad fluency from four lessons.
