BEGINNER MANDARIN · HOTEL

Make the room real.

A source-backed check-in lesson for bookings, surnames, documents, room numbers, requests, and small repairs.

THE CHECK-IN CHAIN

A booking is not a room yet.

Checking into a hotel in Mandarin is a verification chain, not a single phrase. The front desk may need your reservation, surname, passport, room nights, and a room detail; you may then need to locate the elevator, ask about a facility, or report that one detail is wrong. Knowing 酒店 (hotel) is only the beginning of the exchange.

This guide separates the jobs that learners often collapse into one sentence: identify the booking, prove which guest you are, confirm the stay, receive the room card, and make one useful request. The names, room numbers, dates, and facilities below are fictional practice. They are not a booking, hotel policy, identity check, or current travel instruction.

CONTROLLED PRACTICE

Complete the handoff.

Three fictional check-ins test reservation, identity, document, room detail, and repair as separate moves.

CHECK-IN 1 / 3

Keep the handoff clear.

Choose each front-desk move in the order it becomes useful. These are fictional practice prompts.

YOUR CHECK-IN

Start with the reservation.

FIVE CHECK-IN STAGES

Each phrase completes a different handoff.

01

您好,我有预订。

Nín hǎo, wǒ yǒu yùdìng.

Find the booking

Hello, I have a reservation.

Open the check-in task by stating that a booking exists. 预订 names the reservation, not the room card or the passport.

02

我姓李。

Wǒ xìng Lǐ.

Give the surname

My surname is Li.

A front desk may search by surname. Give the family name clearly, then spell or show the booking when the written form matters.

03

请出示您的护照。

Qǐng chūshì nín de hùzhào.

Show the document

Please show your passport.

Understand a document request and hand over the item. 这是我的护照 confirms what you are giving.

04

住两晚,对吗?

Zhù liǎng wǎn, duì ma?

Confirm the stay

Two nights, correct?

Listen for the duration and confirm or repair it. A booking detail is not the same as the room number.

05

我的房间在几楼?

Wǒ de fángjiān zài jǐ lóu?

Ask for the next thing

What floor is my room on?

After receiving the room card, ask for one practical detail. Keep the request separate from the identity and reservation check.

SIX PRACTICAL DECISIONS

The reservation is only one field.

01

酒店, 房间, and 前台 are different places/jobs

酒店 is the hotel, 房间 is the room, and 前台 is the front desk. Saying 我在酒店 does not tell the clerk that you have a reservation; saying 我的房间 is not a request to locate the booking.

02

预订 is a booking; 入住 is the stay/check-in action

有预订 means there is a reservation. 办理入住 or 入住 refers to checking in or beginning the stay. A learner can have a reservation without yet having completed the front-desk check-in.

03

姓 is often the efficient identity handoff

我姓 + surname gives the family name. It is useful when the reservation is indexed by surname, but the hotel may still need a passport or another document. Do not treat a spoken surname as a substitute for an actual identity requirement.

04

Room numbers are a listening checkpoint

A room number may be read digit by digit in a learning exchange, such as 八零六. Listen for the digits and repeat them back if needed. Local speech and hotel practice can vary, so use the written room card as the authoritative record.

05

给您 fits the service handoff

When handing a document to a front-desk worker, 给您 is a polite “here you are” in this context. It is a small register choice, not a promise that every service interaction follows one fixed script.

06

A room problem needs an object and a request

房卡不能用 means the room card does not work; 可以帮我看一下吗? asks whether the staff member can take a look. Name the failing object and ask for the next action instead of saying only 不好.

ONE COMPLETE EXCHANGE

Find, verify, receive, ask.

01

Guest

您好,我有预订,姓李。

Nín hǎo, wǒ yǒu yùdìng, xìng Lǐ.

Hello, I have a reservation under the surname Li.

Open the booking search with the useful identity detail.

02

Front desk

您好。请出示您的护照。

Nín hǎo. Qǐng chūshì nín de hùzhào.

Hello. Please show your passport.

Request the document needed for the front-desk process.

03

Guest

好的,给您。我们住两晚。

Hǎo de, gěi nín. Wǒmen zhù liǎng wǎn.

Okay, here you are. We’re staying two nights.

Hand over the document and state the stay length.

04

Front desk

好的,这是您的房卡,八零六房。

Hǎo de, zhè shì nín de fángkǎ, bā líng liù fáng.

All right, here is your room card, room 806.

Complete the check-in handoff with the room card and number.

05

Guest

谢谢。我的房间在几楼?

Xièxie. Wǒ de fángjiān zài jǐ lóu?

Thank you. What floor is my room on?

Ask the next practical question after the room number is given.

06

Front desk

在八楼,电梯在右边。

Zài bā lóu, diàntī zài yòubiān.

It’s on the eighth floor; the elevator is on the right.

Answer with location information and close the immediate check-in task.

REPAIR THE STAY

Name the failing detail.

01

The reservation uses a different surname

State the booking surname clearly and show the written record if pronunciation is uncertain.

预订的姓是王。

The surname on the reservation is Wang.

02

The number or nights are wrong

Reject the incorrect detail and give the replacement.

不对,是三晚。

That’s not right; it’s three nights.

03

The room card fails

Name the object and ask for a checking action.

房卡不能用,可以帮我看一下吗?

The room card doesn’t work. Could you take a look?

04

You missed the floor

Ask for the missing location rather than restarting the check-in.

请问,房间在几楼?

Excuse me, what floor is the room on?

BEGINNER QUESTIONS

The boundaries around checking in.

How do I say “I have a reservation” in Chinese?

Say 我有预订 or 我预订了一个房间. At the front desk, add your surname with 我姓 + surname so the booking can be located.

What does 入住 mean at a hotel?

入住 refers to beginning or being in the hotel stay; 办理入住 is the check-in process. 预订 refers to the booking that exists before the check-in is completed.

How do I give my surname at a Chinese hotel?

Use 我姓 + surname, such as 我姓李. If the written surname may be ambiguous, show the reservation or document as well; language cannot replace the hotel’s identity procedure.

How do I ask which floor my room is on?

我的房间在几楼? asks what floor the room is on. You can repeat the number from the room card to verify what you heard.

How do I report that my room card does not work?

房卡不能用 says the room card cannot be used. Add 可以帮我看一下吗? to ask the front desk for the next checking action.

Language practice, not hotel advice.

All names, room numbers, stay lengths, documents, facilities, and hotel responses in this lesson are fictional practice. They are not a reservation, identity-verification procedure, room-access guarantee, current hotel policy, or travel/legal advice. Actual document, check-in, deposit, foreign-guest, and payment requirements depend on the property and current rules.
