加油 is the compact push of encouragement you hear when someone needs to keep trying, hold on, or give something their effort. It fits a race, an exam, a difficult task, or a friend who needs a boost.
English needs to follow the moment: “You’ve got this,” “Keep going,” “Come on,” or sometimes “Good luck” may all work. 加油 is focused on continuing and putting in effort, not on promising success. “Add oil” exists as a playful bilingual expression, but it is not the everyday English equivalent.
